Analysing opening scenes-Divergent

Analysing opening scenes-Divergent

The opening of divergent starts of with the logo's of the companies which made it, these are summit entertainment which is a branch of lionsgate films and red wagon entertainment, This starts off by showing that the people in the audience are in for what should be a good show because lionsgate is very well known and very rarely doesn't impress, as for red wagon entertainment the audience can gather that because they are working with lionsgate they must be a good company because they wouldn't sabotage their reputation on a bad film.

Different types of shots are used to give the audience a feel for the environment and an insight into the setting of the film. The first shot we see is a panning shot of a vast field which eventually shows us the picturesque landscape of an industrial civilisation which would be the establishing shot allowing the audience to possibly personalize the opening scene as they may relate the city on screen to the environment they live in now. It then uses a birds eye view to cast the setting of the film to the audience so that they may get a feel for the size of the city and the wide range of characters in it. It uses high angle, low angle and tracking shots to show us the diversity in the social hierarchy in the city.

sound is exhibited non diegetically from the start of the opening credits via the music and sound it chooses to involve, they chose to use a high pitch sort of singing along with long high pitched notes as well as a repetitive piano tune which keeps getting played, the music is there to make us remember the surroundings perhaps more vividly. The first example of the use of diegetic sound we get is of a train speeding along, this could symbolize the business of life around there and how quick peoples life's passes by. We then hear people talking but only faintly sort of like a rift in the classes because it almost feels like we are put into the perspective of an undesirable who isn't involved in anyone's conversation, this could also be when the low angle shot is used because it can make us feel smaller, weaker and more defenceless to other peoples judgements and opinions.

Costumes are used effectively in the scene as it shows the audience a difference in class or occupation in the city. This is shown with the many different colours people are wearing around the town. It seems from this scene that people who have specific colours stick with other people with those specific colours showing that there is a massive divide in society. We can see this in the last 10 seconds of the clip when the group of people wearing suits all walk past in the same colour outfits whereas the woman in the middle of the scene is wearing bright yellow to show that she is somehow different to the people around her and so she sticks out and draws attention from the audience.

An enigma code is used during the opening scene because at it shows the setting of the story it shows lots of buildings with damages and as for the moment we are unsure why there are these damages to the buildings so we can only presume that some sort of conflict took place for it ot end up like it did.
