Analysing opening scene-True romance

Analysing opening scene-True romance

The opening to true romance uses lots of different sounds, both diegetic and non-diegetically to emphasize the fact that true love can be in a place where you least expect it and with a man/woman who you would never think would be perfect for you in a million years. There is a lot of dialogue using informal language between two characters who we think will be the main characters in the film, as well as this there is a few different tracks to go with the different settings, for example in the bar the music is more lively and quicker whereas when the credits start to come in with the actors names the music is a lot more festive and represents what we see on screen with all the snow by putting on a Christmas themed merry tune. It also has a narration from the woman we see at the start where she talks us through her life story and her quest to find out what true love is.

The shot types used are very differing, at the start the shots of the couple keep changing from over the shoulder to low angle to close ups just to give us a wider view on the characters we would associate with the main character role. The shots then differ to show all aspect of life in the city the story is based in, for example it shows all different aspects of life from the streets, to cars, to skyscrapers, it shows us a wide range of peoples lives. It also seems to centre around the people gathering around the fire almost as if its trying to say that they will be significant characters and maybe main characters at that. The main shots are focused on the main characters and every angle of them to give people in the audience someone they can relate with through the picture and dialogue used.

The opening scene features some narrative events such as the woman at the start talking about her feelings on what love is and should be and how she feels it has its place in society, this narration helps the audience to confirm that this is indeed a romance because she talks about the main topic of love to symbolize what the whole story will be about, one woman's quest for true love.

The woman is portrayed as a high class, posh woman with high standards of entertainment, We can see this with the clothes that she wears because they look like top of the range designer clothes. The woman has a strong stereotypical new York accent and this makes us feel like the movie is actually in America. The man on the other hand is not in formal clothes rather casual to suggest he just goes there for a drink every night.which could contrast he's relaxed and witty personality as displayed by the dialogue he's involved in.

Analysing opening scenes-Love actually

Analysing opening scenes-Love actually

in the opening scene of love actually sound is used to express a definition of love through the non diegetic sound of the dialogue used and the small and quiet sound of music in the background which is subtle enough to give the pictures and clips shown more of an image to the viewer. The narrative dialogue the director chose to include adds more of an atmosphere as it talks about what love is and what it can do and have an influence on. This makes it very clear to the audience that this is a romance film because the first thing they talk about is love, this helps the audience to settle down and get ready for the story ahead. The non diegetic music used is there to bring more emphasis to the narrators voice and what he is saying, its there so that people in the audience are not to busy focusing on the clips and therefore their full attention will be on what the narrator is saying.

There are lots of different camera shots used during the opening scene to get across the feeling of love to the audience in a more descriptive and visual way then words. The shots range is very diverse with all types of shots being exhibited, these variety of shots could contradict in the way everyone feels and expresses love in different ways. For example most of the shots are off people in a wide audience finding the loved one they have been looking for, the camera shots seem to focus more on the people they want us to see so that they can get across the true diversity of love in all its many forms to the audience in just over a minute. The camera angles we are shown as people in the audience are all of very happy people who are reuniting with their love ones and they show that love through the facial expressions they make, this is significant because it catches the eye of people in the audience because it is the thing in the scene which sticks out the most.

The setting they chose was Heathrow airport to film this opening scene because the director decided that he wanted to prove people wrong and go to a place where love is shown many times over a days period between a wide range of different people in different cultures and different countries all arriving and uniting in love at an airport. This does however leave an enigma at the end because we have to think why they are in the airport for the opening scene and whether that airport will have any significance in the overall plot of the film.

Analysing opening scenes-The notebook

Analysing opening scenes-The notebook
The opening shot of the notebook is a very long shot of a man canoeing through an exotic river, this shot is very intriguing to the viewer because the setting is very beautiful to the eyes with a sunset in the background as well. The thing which catches the eye the most is the fact that the man in the canoe is the only thing moving in the entire scene and therefore contrasts what could of been a still image of a beautiful view. The movement the man is doing is interesting because it is like he is rowing away from something in his past or towards something in his future, this information is left from the viewer so that it is up to them to make a conclusion from what they can see. It then zooms in to just focus on the actual canoer, at first it zooms in but remains a long shot but the second time it does zoom into more of a tracking shot with camera racking the movement of the canoer as he makes his way down the river. The canoers slow movements with the oars could represent the fact that this film is indeed a romance film and therefore won't be a very fast paced film rather a slow and steady speed throughout. The fact that there is so many different shots centred on this one canoer shows us that he must have a significant part in the story of the film or is the main character who the director wanted us to see as a shadowy figure form afar so for the moment he stays anonymous to the audience. We then get a birds eye view of birds flying maybe representing freedom of love exhibited between who we presume to be the main character and someone else. This other person is shown first using an over the shoulder shot to show that she has been looking out for this guy and has been waiting for his arrival. The next shot of her is a long shot through a window to show that there is still barriers between the two of them. The red colour throughout the whole scene is used because traditionally red is the colour of love and therefore to use a lot of red in the whole scene is to show that these two different people are meant to be together but for whatever reason are yet to actually break the barrier keeping them apart.

The actual opening scene has very little sound in it, however it does have a constant use of non diegetic sound in the background through the slow, quiet song which they are playing, the song in general is slow to represent the pace at which the film will go which isn't very fast seeing its a romance film. As for diegetic sound the only bit we hear is right at the end where there is a tiny bit of dialogue between two woman, one who we presume is significant because she seems to be drawn to the canker who we presume is a main character and one who seems to have very little relevance to the actual storyline and is just there as a reminder that these two people aren't the only ones alive.

An enigma code is used at the ending of the scene when the woman who we presume to be the main character walks away from the window after a bit of dialogue with another woman, this leaves us with second thoughts on whether the man canoeing is a significant character for the plot and whether he will be the person to make this film into a proper romance films with lots of love and many obstacles blocking their way to each other.

Analysing opening scenes-Divergent

Analysing opening scenes-Divergent

The opening of divergent starts of with the logo's of the companies which made it, these are summit entertainment which is a branch of lionsgate films and red wagon entertainment, This starts off by showing that the people in the audience are in for what should be a good show because lionsgate is very well known and very rarely doesn't impress, as for red wagon entertainment the audience can gather that because they are working with lionsgate they must be a good company because they wouldn't sabotage their reputation on a bad film.

Different types of shots are used to give the audience a feel for the environment and an insight into the setting of the film. The first shot we see is a panning shot of a vast field which eventually shows us the picturesque landscape of an industrial civilisation which would be the establishing shot allowing the audience to possibly personalize the opening scene as they may relate the city on screen to the environment they live in now. It then uses a birds eye view to cast the setting of the film to the audience so that they may get a feel for the size of the city and the wide range of characters in it. It uses high angle, low angle and tracking shots to show us the diversity in the social hierarchy in the city.

sound is exhibited non diegetically from the start of the opening credits via the music and sound it chooses to involve, they chose to use a high pitch sort of singing along with long high pitched notes as well as a repetitive piano tune which keeps getting played, the music is there to make us remember the surroundings perhaps more vividly. The first example of the use of diegetic sound we get is of a train speeding along, this could symbolize the business of life around there and how quick peoples life's passes by. We then hear people talking but only faintly sort of like a rift in the classes because it almost feels like we are put into the perspective of an undesirable who isn't involved in anyone's conversation, this could also be when the low angle shot is used because it can make us feel smaller, weaker and more defenceless to other peoples judgements and opinions.

Costumes are used effectively in the scene as it shows the audience a difference in class or occupation in the city. This is shown with the many different colours people are wearing around the town. It seems from this scene that people who have specific colours stick with other people with those specific colours showing that there is a massive divide in society. We can see this in the last 10 seconds of the clip when the group of people wearing suits all walk past in the same colour outfits whereas the woman in the middle of the scene is wearing bright yellow to show that she is somehow different to the people around her and so she sticks out and draws attention from the audience.

An enigma code is used during the opening scene because at it shows the setting of the story it shows lots of buildings with damages and as for the moment we are unsure why there are these damages to the buildings so we can only presume that some sort of conflict took place for it ot end up like it did.

Analysing opening scenes-The conjuring

Analysing opening scenes-The conjuring

the conjuring starts off by showing us the company logos of Warner bro's studio's and new line cinema to give the audience the idea of what to expect from the movie. Both companies are well known so people automatically expect the movie to live up to certain standards and to be able to do certain stuff which all horror movies can, stuff like jump-scares, tension and an overall spooky feel is what people expect from a horror movie, especially one made by such good companies.

Sound is used very effectively during the opening 30-35 seconds of the film because it starts us off with a black screen with the diegetic sound of people talking in the background, this creates a sense of mysteriousness about the people and makes the audience think about whether or not these people are the main characters or not. It is also very effective because it doesn't use any music and so the audience member's undivided attention is on the voices of the people speaking and what they are saying. This automatically involves the audience member because it makes them think simple thoughts like "its a girls voice", "their talking about possession" and other general thoughts to help the members of the audience feel more connected to the character in the film through what they hear rather than what they see.
After this we hear a loud knock on the door 5 times in succession twice at a generally even spacing between each knock, however when the character has opened the door and picked up the not it knocks three times louder, quicker and more aggressively and also adds what sounds like children laughing to add to the atmosphere created by the silence after the knocking.
The sound during the whole scene is mainly diegetic sound with the dialogue, knocking, objects moving, doors opening etc. however it has a limited amount of non-diegetic sound used, for example when we see the doll behind the door there is a bit of music played not very loudly but enough for us to realise that it is there and the same when the guy says he can help them there is a subtle piece of music maybe trying to make us think its not a good idea to involve this guy.

The first shot we see is of what we assume to be the problem these people are facing, it starts of with a close up of a the right side of a creepy dolls face, this implants the message into are head just by the way the doll looks that there's something not right about it and the fact that the shot was a close up shot makes us feel like the doll has to be significant for us to view it in such detail. It also still hasn't any music because the dialogue is still happening, this doesn't create the usual sense of tension rather a sense of uneasiness.
they use an over the shoulder shot when the people read the notes so that the audience tend to think that they are in scene and they are the person standing behind the main character and looking down on the note,
they use long shots when showing the doll to give us the idea that its still quite far away but still too close for comfort, there also seems to be a general trend that everyone time they show the doll in the movie it gets closer and closer to the people and the view of the doll gets closer from a long shot to a close up. They also keep using a view where we look straight ahead at the person to try and get it to feel like that character is talking directly to you and you to them. This makes the audience feel like they are more involved in the movie and therefore get more engrossed into the film.

an enigma code is used at the end when the the lady who we presume is one of the less important characters who are just there to ask questions so the audience don't get lost on what's happening asks "can you help us" to which the man reply'
s "yes we can", this exchange of words is a bit strange because at the moment all the doll has done is scratch a few photo frames and so isn't much of a danger yet they still looked for professional help, strange seeing this doll hasn't said or done anything to hurt them in anyway and is only trying to scare them for whatever reason it has but yet they still look for professional help instead of just destroying it by burning it or hitting with an axe or any other method which could get rid of it.

Romance movie target audience

Romance movie target audience

In general romance films are usually directed to be good viewing for woman however if the movie does it really well it can also be good for men too. Usually woman aged anywhere from 13-35 will enjoy the heartbreaking agony of some romance films, this may be because they can relate to the main character more because usually in a romance film it is a woman protagonist and therefore woman will be able to relate more and be able to put themselves into the shoes of the main character and can imagine what it would be like to be them in that situation.

Teenagers seem to be a big contributor to the market on romance films and as such the directors usually will make the actor/actress young so the younger audience can relate more to what young love truly is and what it is about.

The romance genre in general is very versatile with the amount of different choices you can have, for example you can sit through romantic comedies for a more light hearted love affair, a romantic drama where every part of the film is overly emotional and dramatic to create more of a loving atmosphere between any young couple in the audience, a chick flick is a type of romance film aimed mainly at woman who can relate to the main characters, it always has some sort of relate-able relationship in it, romantic action comedies is just a type of romance film which bends different genres in into it to make more of an appealing movie to a wider audience and the same goes for the last one a romantic thriller which just tries to make it more interesting for a male audience who wouldn't necessarily like the film otherwise. This wide range of diversity makes the romance genre easilly adaptable to anyone's specific needs in a movie whether that be a light hearted affair, an action sequence or just full on romance it has something which can make everyone happy.

horror movie target audience

Horror movie target audience

The average age for someone watching a movie is usually the younger generation usually between 15-25, this is because people want to experience different emotions and feelings, they are more likely to enjoy the heart pounding horror and sometimes watch things before thinking about possibilities leading to a frightening experience. The horror can excite the young audience more easily and this is good because young people are less likely to be put off by violent imagery which could have a negative effect on the older audience.

The male audience are more likely to like horror films because they can be viewed more as a thrill seekers, it could also be because of the fact that there can be a lot of violence in horror movies which a female audience might not like as much

The class range is aimed at all classes because the prices are relatively cheap but the entertainment good, however it is usually the middle class and working class who come to see the film, this may be because of the satisfaction middle class people seek when watching a film.

Usually people go to see horror movies with a group of friends because it is more of an entertaining experience for everyone in the party to watch every person in the groups different reactions. It is also popular among young couples who are having their first date because it can provide a quiet yet close first date experience. It also tends to be popular with couples who have been going out a long time as they are happy in each-others company and therefore are probably used to how the other one will react.

What are you doing here?-Media studies production

What are you doing here?-Media studies production

Actual video just go on preveiw to view

using software- Adobe premier elements 10 was the desired software which we used because it is easy to cut, swap, add, implement and change anything in the production. For example we cut out bits of the clips which weren't to the desired standard and made sure only the best three quality pieces of work were involved in our video. This means that the highest quality we could achieve was achieved and that for a first attempt at filming was relatively good. We also added a title by going on options and adding it in to make the scene not to rushed and a bit longer

As a group we were tasked with going out in 25 minute period and filming multiple types of scenes using different types of shots such as the over the shoulder shot, high and low angle shot, close, medium, long and two person shots and we had to use the exact some dialogue "what are you doing here", this allowed us to get the same good quality over the continuation of the three clips and allowed us to compare the end product of each set with the quality of the sound picked up.
camera angles-The three shots we used was an over the shoulder shot, high angle and a low angle shot. The three shots were shot well at the desired angle and there was relatively no shaking of the camera despite us not having a tripod.

Improvements- there was a few improvements which we can add to our next piece to make it better, for example the length of the film is a measly 8 seconds and so we should focus on making it longer, also in the first shot it looked like i was just about to laugh which can take out the seriousness of the work.

Analysing opening scenes-Into the storm

Into the storm-opening analysis

The opening starts off with four people in a car driving out in the middle of the country in a medium sized family car. The fact that they drive out into the middle of nowhere gives the audience its first sense of what the film is about. The audience know the films name (into the storm) and so can straightaway infer it probably has wind, rain and lots of damage. With the setting being set in the middle of nowhere and with the title's name being known before the movie even starts it means that the audience know that there is going to be a lot of action from natural forces such as a tornado, hurricane or a typhoon.

the opening shot of the film is a short shot of the two passengers in the front seat of the car. This means that people get an idea that these first lot of people might be the main characters of the film, however as the shots progress it makes the audience think back on their first original statement as the storm picks up in velocity. Once the storm gets closer and closer the shot type changes to a first person from the view of the man holding the camera. This makes the audience feel like they are actually in the movie scene and gives them a more diverse movie experience. The first shot we get of the tornado is a long shot in near pitch black darkness, the reason the director chose to use a long shot is because it can show more clearly the size and destructive force of the tornado. This is good because the long shot makes the tornado appear in aveil of darkness and so it is very hard to see. This is why the director chose to add in the electrical pylons short circuiting because it gives the audienc a quick glimpse of the tornado every few seconds almost as if there is a constant threat looming in the darkness. The fact that it is so well hidden is a typical action movie cliché because in action movies there usually is an unseen enemy causing havoc on the streets or to innocent people but the hero can't see them.

Age:%:Gender:%:Class%:
4-60%Male:59%AB16%
7-111%Female:41%C142%
12-149%C229%
15-2459%DE13%
25-3413%
35-449%
45+9%

From this table i can find out that the main age range that watched this film was the 15-24 year old. This may be because the action genre appeals to a younger audience who prefer all the explosions, natural disasters and destruction. The film was watched by mainly men with 59% of the audience being men. This shows that men are more likely to watch the horror genre than woman. This could be because it has a lot of violence in the movies, this contradicts with the stereotypical view of woman where they prefer a sappy  love romance. The middle class tended to like this film the most with 71% overall whereas the lower and upper classes didn't see it as much this could be because their tastes are maybe different. The violence could be a main contributor to a low interest rate from the upper classes because they maybe don't want to see as much of the destruction and violence as the middle classes who could probably aldo relate more to the characters as they are not rich or poor butare working class meaning the middle andworking class audience can relate more with the character shown on screen.
