Analysing opening scenes-Godzilla 2014

Analysing opening scenes-Godzilla 2014

Analysis of the opening two minutes of Godzilla 2014- The opening two minutes of the film starts of by giving the audience a sense of what this movie is to be like, it gives of an eerie sounding music and shows the Warner Bro's and Legendary logo's. This means the audiences can connect with what the movie should be like and judge for themselves whether or not it reaches the required and expected standard of the Warner Brother's studio's and films like the dark knight, the matrix and the hangover to look and compare with Godzilla which was definitely in with a chance of getting all the large audiences from the lovers of the previously listed films.

It then starts a rolling picture slideshow of many different objects appearing for a few seconds each, along with the tense war music in the background it really catches the attention of every single person in the entire cinema as the images are so graphic and really show all the points in the war and conflict around the world. These images vary from Darwin s theory of evolution to many pictures of different fossils and evolutionary standard, then to lots of soldiers, army vehicles, researchers, battleships, children, targets, future economic plans and then finally Godzilla and the 1954 Marshall islands experiment added together to make a major storyline.

The reason they use all of these different types of images is to show all of humanity in just over a minute, the pictures themselves are meant to represent all aspects of a war zone and people as a whole with everything that affects the way we live and the borders we have implemented to get across a strong visual image of modern society as a whole to get the audience to really use their own life's to compare and judge what and whether or not the images shown are of any significance to the plot and the film.

Different shot types: at the start of the film the shots are all varied depending on the type of image the director (Gareth Edwards) is trying to get across, he uses all types of shots- close, medium, long, really long, panning, and birds eye view, a rising view, a low angle view and a shoulder shot view. This massive amount of different shots just in the opening two and a half minutes of a film really catches the attention of the audience, especially with the topic of war and conflict as the main image of what comes up. These different shots have been purposely put there just to make the audience think of the true meaning of conflict and why the director very carefully picked all the pictures to add an effect on the audience which will shock them.
The reason the director chooses to have such a vast range of different shots in the opening sequence is because the scene is trying to show a wider picture, in other words some shots are medium or close ups of children to suggest that even innocence is affected in the war zone whereas the extremely long shots of Godzilla is to show just how much of an impact can be, this massive shot helps to emphasize that is the whole worlds problem not any one nations. This idea that Godzilla can be and go anywhere using land or sea is put across in the first scene by him swimming, this emphasizes the fact that any place where the sea or the sky is he could go there because he has no limit on where he can and can't go so for the people who's job it is to deal with it, it would be very hard to predict where and when it will show up.

Sound is exhibited in all parts of the opening scene, however it is only non-diegetic sound which is actually used. The sound used is very important to create an atmosphere in the opening scene which will captivate the audience into watching it. The war music in the background is very loud and deep and plays in a set rhythm, the rhythm used is sort of what you would expect in soldiers marching because it has the same dark tune every few seconds to symbolize steps. This helps to create the atmosphere because the tune is recurring why always adding new features in, it is also helped by the fact that every time a specific note comes up the image changes. This timing is very good because the mind can remember more of it as the image and sound go hand in hand to allow a visual image to be constructed in your mind. The opening scene chooses to leave out all diegetic sound to great effect because it allows us to focus solely on the build-up to the unveiling of Godzilla.

The characters shown in the opening scene all have very limited time on screen and will play no further role on the movie, this might be because the director wanted people to focus on the striking visuals which depict all that war has an influence on, For example the innocent children who have done nothing wrong, the army officer who tries to console the child maybe after a loss, the whole squad of naval officers on deck of a aircraft carrier who are looking at the nuclear explosion take place. This characters are not significant in the grand scheme of the movie but during the opening scene they are all very significant in creating an opening atmosphere which is very descriptive, it also makes the audience think about the significance of each picture which is good because you want the people in the audience to get a picture in their head of their expectations of the movie before it has even begun so that they can make the film shine out from what they were expecting by adding in some crucial plot twist or some major unexpected event. The opening scene apart from having the music in the background had no other real involvement from diegetic or non-diegetic sound until we get to the countdown part where it counts down from 10-1 and shows different stages of their plans against Godzilla up until number one when they show the bomb form a long shot to symbolize how far away they will have to detonate it from to be safe.

An enigma code is used at the end of the opening scene after the countdown has finished and Godzilla has been hit with a massive bomb, this makes the audience think "how will Godzilla be part of this movie if he got bombed?". It creates a cliff hanger which the audience won't get an answer to till half an hour in on whether or not Godzilla is still alive, this means that the audience are kept waiting in suspense on when he will show up, this creates a quiet atmosphere in the cinema or at home because the people watching the film don't want to miss Godzilla's introduction or part of the movie plot.

Favourite film and genre

Favourite film and genre

Godzilla is my favourite film at the moment because it includes lots of action for pretty much the entire film. They use lots of techniques to make the movie interesting and full of suspense with the constant whereabouts of the monsters being a constant threat to the humanity around it. They also use a good story plot to bring all the monsters into a different light with the footage form the Marshall Islands experiment and other disasters in world history and  give them a reason other than human error to blame (Godzilla).

The film uses a vast array of camera shots to get across different types of views of all characters in the film. For example for the main characters it uses close up shots to get across the emotion more for most scenes and long shots on the fight scenes between monsters, battleships, tanks or any other main fighting machine.

The main characters are there mainly to introduce the story (Ken Watanabe) or they are just there to add more suspense to the film and give a more human feel in a fight between aliens and Godzilla to make the scenes more realistic.

Favourite genre

My favourite genre in movies is action because I feel like it is the most interesting to watch for a large majority of time. It also appeals to a wide audience and a lot of different groups of people. The genre is great because some of the best movies don’t have one part in the movie without a bit of action which is great for the viewer because you can get properly engrossed into the film and understand it a lot more to a fill without as much detail.

The action films have a lot more CGI nowadays because it is cheaper to make a realistic explosion on the green screen rather than making a proper explosion which will cost a lot more money to create. The best action films of our decade have all had similar things in common and they are- a good plot, continuous action, good actors, large budget, wide audience, lots of explosions, good music and a hero and villain character.

This means that all the films can look at the things they need and put them all together because to appeal to a wide range of audiences you need to have a wide range of different stuff happening. For example a lot of explosions for teenagers and children, a romance part which isn’t the sole point of the movie for parents and well established actors to act so the older generation can see actors from the era.

James Cameron

I like James Cameron as a director as he takes a lot of time in his work, E.G avatar took ten years to make and produce proving he has a lot of patience and cares a lot about the final product, enough at least to make the movie three hours long with lots of build-up and not a boring part, it does however bring out emotions from every type of person such as in titanic where lots of newspapers at the time said that grown men were crying after watching that film which proves he is a master at controlling emotional scenes in movies and playing with people’s heads to make them truly believe they are masterpieces of work done much to the delight of that generation and many more after that.

James Cameron’s best movies via critics and my own judgement is titanic and avatar as they have the most detail and are visually stunning films. However he also did other films such as terminator and terminator 2, as well as sanctum in 2011, but unfortunately this films didn’t receive as much critical acclaim and only did really well in the box office because of James Cameron’s association with titanic and avatar and the film ended up leaving some people disappointed as they didn’t live up to timeless classics like titanic and avatar which will be viewed for years to come and will easily become a part of modern society.
